British Citizenship Grants by Previous Country of Nationality

This relates to British Citizenship Grants by Previous Country of NationalityBritish Citizenship Grants during 1990-2016 in the light of the Official StatisticsIndian, Pakistani and Nigerian nationals topped the list for the grant of British Citizenship. During the period Indians, Pakistani and Nigerian nationals were granted 373,318,  288,128 and 139,145 British Citizenships, which constitutes 12.32%, 9.51% and 4.59% of the Total British Citizenship Grants 3,031,133 during 1990-2016, respectively. Therefore, nationals from these three (3) countries were conferred with more than one fourth (26.42%) of the British Citizenship Grants during 1990-2016.

Top Ten Nationalities Get 50% of the British Citizenship Grants

The other seven (7) nationalities that are in the TOP TEN are: Bangladeshi- 121,759 (4.02%), South African- 109,282 (3.61%), Somali- 109,167 (3.60%), Filipino- 104,242 (3.44%), Sri Lankan- 92,608 (3.06%), Turkish- 89,814 (2.96%), and Ghanaian 73,852 (2.44%). Therefore, these TEN (10) Nationalities received nearly fifty percent (49.54%) of the total British Citizenship Grants during 1990-2016. British Overseas Citizens were also awarded 74,000 British Citizenships (2.44% of the Total Grants).

Nationals from 218 Countries Get British Citizenship 1990-2016

All in all, during 1990-2016, a total of 3,031,133 British Citizenship were Granted to Nationals from 218 Countries, Terrorities, Principalities, Islands and States, along with British Overseas Citizenship, Stateless, Refugees, Other and Unknown with the following breakup:

  • Nationals from 7 Countries were granted more than 100,000 British Citizenship Grants- i.e. 1,245,041 Citizenship Grants, constituting 41.08% of the Total Grants;
  • Nationals from 10 Countries (and British Overseas Citizens) were granted more than 50,000 but less than 100,000 British Citizenship Grants- i.e. 773,560 Grants (25.52% of the Total);
  • Nationals from 33 Countries were granted more than 10,000 but less than 50,000 British Citizenship Grants- i.e. 671,537 Grants (22.15% of the Total);
  • Nationals from 75 Countries (and Stateless, Other and Unknown) were granted more than 1,000 but less than 10,000 British Citizenship Grants- i.e. 321,171  Grants (10.60% of the Total);
  • Nationals from 93 Countries (and Refugees) were granted more than ONE (1) but less than 1,000 British Citizenship Grants- i.e. 19,824 Grants (0.65% of the Total); and
  • Nationals from 25 Countries did not get any British Citizenship Grants.

British Citizenship Grants during 1990-2016

The lowest number of citizenship grants (37,010) were made in 1997 and the highest number of grants (208,095) during 2013. On a year to year basis, 57,271 (1990), 58,642 (1991), 42,244 (1992), 45,793 (1993), 44,033 (1994), 40,516 (1995), 43,069 (1996), 37,010 (1997), 53,935 (1998), 54,902 (1999), 82,210 (2000), 90,282 (2001), 120,121 (2002), 130,535 (2003), 148,273 (2004), 161,699 (2005), 154,018 (2006), 164,637 (2007), 129,377 (2008),  203,789 (2009), 195,094 (2010), 177,934 (2011), 194,370 (2012), 208,095 (2013), 125,754 (2014), 118,109 (2015) and 149,421 (2016) British Citizenship Grants were conferred.

Region-Wise Breakup- British Citizenship Grants

Region-Wise details indicate that most British Citizenship grants (908,278) constituting 29.96% of the total grants during the period were made to the Nationals from South Asia721,925 grants (23.82% of the total grants) were made to the nationals from Africa Sub-Saharan Countries. Therefore, more than 50% of British Citizenship grants were made to the Nationals from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

A region-wise breakup, in descending order, of the British Citizenship grants to nationals from other geographic regions is a follows: Europe Other 218,863 Citizenship Grants (7.22% of the Total Grants), Middle East 185,822 (6.13%), Asia South East 176,762 (5.83%), America Central and South 148,039 (4.88%), Asia East 105,061 (3.47%), Other 86,592 (2.86%), America North 84,433 (2.79%), Africa North 83,149 (2.74%), Oceania 78,468 (2.59%), EU 14 67,869 (2.24%), Asia Central 63,629 (2.10%), EU 8 54,736 (1.81%), EU 2 31,629 (1.04%) and EU Other 15,878 (0.52%).

Nationals of 7 Countries Received More Than 100,000 Citizenship

Nationals of 7 Countries Received more than 100,000 British Citizenship Grants during 1990-2016. In total nationals from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, South Africa, Somalia and the Philippines received 1,245,041 British Citizenship Grants, constituting 41.08% of the Total Citizenships Grants with the following breakup:

  1. India- 373,318 British Citizenship Grants (12.32% of the Total Grants)
  2. Pakistan- 288,128 (9.51%)
  3. Nigeria- 139,145 (4.59%)

In total, British Overseas Citizens and nationals from Sri Lanka, Turkey, Ghana, China, Iraq, Zimbabwe, Iran, Afghanistan, United States and Jamaica received 773,560 British Citizenship Grants, constituting 25.52% of the Total (3,031,133) British Citizenships Grants with the following breakup:

  1. Sri Lanka- 92,608 British Citizenship Grants (3.06% of the Total Grants)
  2. Turkey- 89,814 (2.96%)
  3. British Overseas Citizens- 74,000 (2.44%)
