1. Do Germans Need to Apply for UK Visa?

From 1 January 2021, German citizens needs to apply for a visa for living, working, or studying longer than six months in the UK. However, after the end of the Free Movement, German Citizens do not need a visa for visiting the UK for up to six months. Accordingly, Germans can travel to the UK without applying for a visa for holidays, short term study, limited business activities or family visits.

A German nationals or other EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens living in Germany can check whether they require a UK visa by using the online tool. If a German national require a visa, then can apply online.

Most of the German nationals or other EU, EEA and Swiss citizens living in Germany who need to apply for a visa to come to the UK should be able to complete their entire application online using the Immigration App to verify their identity. Accordingly, German citizens or EU, EEA and Swiss citizens living in Germany may not need to go to a Visa Application Centre (VAC), submit their passport or obtain a visa vignette prior to travel.

    4. UK Family Visas for German Citizens

    From Oct 11, 2021, the UK spouse visa fees from Germany are €1,862. The UK embassy visa fees in Germany are same for civil, unmarried, or same-sex partner, fiancé(e) and proposed civil partner. UK settlement priority service cost in Germany is €700 for fast tracking applications within thirty working days. Accordingly, the UK priority spouse visa fees from Germany in 2021 are €2,562.

    The service standard of UK spouse visa processing time from Germany is to decide 98.5% and 100% applications within 12 and 24 weeks, respectively. Moreover, the service standard for UK spouse priority visa timelines from Germany is 30 working days or 6 weeks.

    The ‘joining or accompanying’ route is for those German Citizens who are applying for visa based on their relationship to another migrant who is not settled in the UK or a British citizen, and who is on a route without a specific visa for dependants.

    The UK spouse or partner visa fees from Germany in 2021 under Dependant Joining or Accompanying route are €1,862.

    EEA Family Permit

    In terms of EEA Regulations 2016, a Non-EEA family member of a German Citizen can apply for an EEA family permit. However, due to Brexit, the EEA family permit route for the non-EEA family members of German Citizens ended on June 30, 2021. Therefore, UKVI is not accepting any new applications for an EEA family permit from non-EEA family members of German citizens after June 30, 2021.

    There are no application charges for EEA Family Permit for non-EEA family members of German citizens. Most of the EEA family permit applications of non-EEA family members of German citizens are decided within 2-3 weeks.

    EU Settlement Scheme Family Permit

    In terms of Appendix EU (Family Permit), a non-EEA family member (spouse, civil partner, child, child above 21 years of age, and parent) of German Citizen living in the UK can apply for EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) Family Permit.

    There are no application charges for EUSS Family Permit for non-EEA family members of a German Citizen living in the UK. The EUSS application processing time is 10-15 working days for most of the non-EEA family members of a German citizen.

    Route to Settlement – Refugee Dependant Relative

    From Oct 11, 2021, the UK visa fees in Germany for Route to Settlement (refugee dependant relative) are €474.

    Appendix ECAA Extension of Stay

    There are no application charges for Dependent children under the age of 21 only applying under “Appendix ECAA Extension of Stay”.

    Settlement for current and former members of HM armed forces, and their dependants

    From Oct 11, 2021, the UK settlement visa fees from Germany for current and former members of HM armed forces, and their dependants are as under:

    • Former UK Armed Forces €1,862
    • Pre 1997 Gurkhas (outside immigration rules) €1,862
    • Overage dependant children of pre 1997 Gurkhas €1,862

    Returning Residents

    Family Reunion to Join Asylum Seekers

    There are no application fees for Family reunion, under Part 11 of Asylum, Immigration Rules (pre-flight dependants). The UK visa fees from Germany in 2021 for Post-flight dependants are €1,862. The application fees for Family reunion (other dependent relatives) are €474.

    5. UK Work Visas for German Citizens

    From the 1st of January 2021, changes in the immigration rules mean that German, other EEA and Swiss (excluding Irish) nationals require a visa to work in the UK. In Q1 2021, there were 3,589 work-related visa grants to EEA nationals newly seeking to come to the UK. The majority of these were in the ‘Other work visas and exemptions’ and ‘Skilled worker’ categories, comprising 60% and 30% of the total work grants, respectively.

    German citizens are eligible for €67 Council of Europe Social Charter (CESC) discount if they are applying for UK Innovator, Start-up, Global Talent initial application, Global Talent subsequent application, Tier 1 Entrepreneur, Skilled Worker, Intra-Company Transfer, T2 Sportsperson & T2 Minister of Religion, Intra-Company Transfer – Graduate Trainee, or T5 (Temporary Worker) Visa as a main applicant.

    UK Global Talent Visa Fees from Germany 2021

    A German Citizen can apply for a UK Global Talent visa if they are a leader or potential leader in academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. The Global Talent visa has replaced the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa. From Oct 11, 2021, the UK Global Talent Visa Fees from Germany are as under:

    Intra-Company Graduate Trainee

    An applicant from Germany can use the Priority (Non-Settlement), Priority (Settlement), and Super-Priority Service to fast track UK visa application. However, it is advisable to use priority or super-priority service to fast track only a straightforward application. A straightforward UK visa application means that the credentials of the applicant are immaculate, without any past refusals and adverse immigration history.

    Please note priority or super-priority service does not guarantee a favourable result. Moreover, payment for priority service does not even guarantee a quick decision.
