The ETA requirement for US citizens took effect on 8 January 2025, and the United States is now the single largest ETA market in the world. It is a digital pre-travel authorisation, applied for through the UK ETA app, and approval is near-automatic — the scheme's overall issue rate is 99.6%, with most decisions returned within minutes.
What the ETA Is — and Is Not
The ETA costs £20, lasts 2 years or until the passport expires, and allows multiple visits of up to 6 months — the UK's equivalent of the US ESTA. It is not a visa but an authorisation to travel to the UK border, and it cannot be used for paid work, long-term study, or settlement. UK Student Visa from the USA 2026
The UK is a top destination for American students, and the UK Student visa reflects that with a 99% grant rate on nearly 17,000 applications a year. It costs $768 plus the health surcharge at £776 per year, and needs a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed sponsor plus maintenance funds of £1,529 per month for London or £1,171 elsewhere. Short courses of up to 6 months can be done on the ETA instead, and graduates can use the Graduate Route for two years of post-study work.

Americans taking a UK job need the Skilled Worker visa — $1,127 for up to three years, or $2,226 for longer — with a Certificate of Sponsorship and a salary of at least £41,700 or the going rate in the Home Office eligible occupations list. High-achieving Americans in academia, tech, or the arts may qualify for Global Talent at $282 with approval, while healthcare professionals use the Health and Care Worker route at $446, exempt from the health surcharge.

The UK Spouse visa costs $2,840 and lets Americans join a British or settled partner under Appendix FM, with the initial visa granted for 33 months and a route to settlement after five years.
