This guide covers UK visa and ETA requirements for US citizens and Green Card holders in 2026. Americans do not need a visa for short visits of up to 6 months, but since 8 January 2025 they must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), now £20, before travelling — and from 25 February 2026 it is strictly enforced at boarding. Green Card holders are judged by passport nationality, not US residence. For those needing a visa, US grant rates are among the highest anywhere: 99% for study and work, 95% for family.

From 25 February 2026, US citizens without a valid ETA will not be allowed to board flights, trains, or ferries to the UK. Airlines must verify ETA status before departure, with no exceptions. Apply through the UK ETA app or at gov.uk ahead of travel — most decisions arrive within minutes, but allow up to three working days.
UK Visa and ETA Requirements for US Citizens 2026
For most Americans, UK travel now means an ETA rather than a visa. US passport holders are visa-exempt visitors, so a trip to London, Edinburgh, or anywhere in the UK for up to 6 months needs only the £20 authorisation. A full visa is required only when the purpose goes beyond a visit — working, studying for a degree, or settling with a partner. On those routes, US applicants enjoy some of the highest grant rates of any nationality.
For short visits up to 6 months, no — but US citizens need an ETA, costing £20 and valid for 2 years, covering tourism, family visits, business, and short courses. For work, study, or settlement, a visa is required. US grant rates are exceptional: 99% for student visas, 99% for work visas, and 95% for family visas. Green Card holders are assessed on their passport nationality, not their US residence.
UK ETA for US Citizens 2026
The ETA requirement for US citizens took effect on 8 January 2025, and the United States is now the single largest ETA market in the world. It is a digital pre-travel authorisation, applied for through the UK ETA app, and approval is near-automatic — the scheme's overall issue rate is 99.6%, with most decisions returned within minutes.
An ETA covers tourism across London, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, plus family visits, business meetings, short courses, and transit. It does not permit paid work or settlement. How the ETA compares with a full visa is explained in our UK ETA guide. Americans with a previous UK refusal or a relevant criminal record may need to apply for a visit visa instead.
UK Visa for US Green Card Holders 2026
Whether a US Green Card holder needs a UK visa depends on passport nationality, not US residence. Green Card holders from visa-exempt countries — Canada, Australia, EU states, Japan — need only an ETA (£20). Those from visa-national countries — India, Pakistan, China, Nigeria, Bangladesh — need a full UK visitor visa ($189) even for a short London trip. The Green Card itself does not change UK requirements.
This is the single most misunderstood point for US residents. The UK assesses entry on your passport nationality, so a Green Card — however long held — does not exempt you from a visa. The practical upside is that US residence and employment strengthen a visa application by evidencing strong ties and stable finances, and you apply from within the US at a VFS Global centre.
| Green Card Holder's Nationality | UK Requirement | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian, Australian, EU, Japanese, South Korean | ETA only | £20 |
| Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Nigerian, Bangladeshi | UK visitor visa | $189 |
If your passport is from India, Pakistan, China, Nigeria, or another visa-national country, you must apply for a UK visitor visa ($189 for six months) even for a short London holiday, regardless of your Green Card. Apply through VFS Global in the US. Indian passport holders in the US are the largest such group — the process is identical to applying from India, but your US ties help. Anyone refused should review our guide to refusal reasons.
A common, costly mistake is booking flights before checking: airlines deny boarding to visa-national passengers without a UK visa, even with a Green Card. Visa-exempt nationals still need an ETA. When in doubt, confirm your status against the nationality grant-rate data and apply early, as visit visas take around three weeks.
UK Visa Fees from the USA 2026
UK visa fees from the US are charged in US Dollars during the online application. Most travellers pay only the £20 ETA. Where a visa is required, the 8 April 2026 schedule raised most fees. Work, study, and family visas also carry the Immigration Health Surcharge, paid separately in pounds at £1,035 per year (£776 for students).
| Route | Fee (USD) | US Grant Rate |
|---|---|---|
| ETA (short visits) | £20 | 99.6% issued |
| 6-month Visitor (if required) | $189 | — |
| Student | $783 | 99% |
| Skilled Worker (≤3 years) | $1,149 | 99% |
| Health and Care Worker | $455 | 99% |
| Global Talent (with approval) | $288 | — |
| Spouse / Partner | $2,896 | 95% |
| Priority service | $702 | — |
UK Student Visa from the USA 2026
US students need a UK Student visa for courses over 6 months, costing $783 plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year. Short courses up to 6 months can be done on the ETA instead. The US student grant rate is exceptional at 99%, on nearly 17,000 applications a year — one of the largest student markets.
The UK is a top destination for American students, and the UK Student visa reflects that with a 99% grant rate. Applicants need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed sponsor and must show maintenance funds of £1,483 per month for London or £1,136 elsewhere. As native English speakers, Americans are exempt from the language test. Graduates can use the Graduate Route for two years of post-study work.
UK Work Visa from the USA 2026
Americans taking a UK job need a Skilled Worker visa, costing $1,149 for up to 3 years or $2,270 for longer. Applicants need a graduate-level job, a £41,700 minimum salary, and a sponsoring employer. The US work grant rate is 99%, on over 11,000 applications a year. Global Talent and Health and Care routes are also popular.
The Skilled Worker visa is the main route, needing a Certificate of Sponsorship and a salary meeting the going rate in the Home Office eligible occupations list. High-achieving Americans in academia, tech, or the arts may qualify for the Global Talent visa, while healthcare professionals use the lower-fee Health and Care Worker route.
| Work Route | Fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| Skilled Worker (≤3 years) | $1,149 |
| Skilled Worker (over 3 years) | $2,270 |
| Health and Care Worker | $455 |
| Global Talent (with approval) | $288 |
UK Spouse & Family Visa from the USA 2026
The UK Spouse visa from the US costs $2,896 and requires the UK sponsor to earn at least £29,000 a year. Processing takes up to 12 weeks, or about 6 weeks with priority service. The US family grant rate is 95%, the highest of any major nationality, reflecting strong UK-US ties.
The UK Spouse visa lets Americans join a British or settled partner under Appendix FM, with the initial visa granted for 33 months and a route to settlement after five years. The minimum income requirement is £29,000, in place since April 2024; a previously announced rise to £38,700 remains paused pending review, so no increase has taken effect.
How to Apply for a UK Visa or ETA from the USA
Americans applying for an ETA use the app. Those needing a visa apply online at gov.uk, pay in US Dollars, and give biometrics at a VFS Global centre — now the route for all US applicants, with centres in New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago, and many other cities. The system is the same one used across the Americas, including Canada, which is also ETA-eligible, and Colombia, which is visa-national. The same ETA-or-visa split applies to other visa-exempt nationals, including Japan and Australia.
- 1. Short visit: apply for the ETA via the UK ETA app.
- 2. Study, work, or family: complete the online application at gov.uk.
- 3. Pay the fee in US Dollars during the application.
- 4. Book biometrics at your nearest VFS Global centre.
- 5. Attend and submit fingerprints, photo, and documents.
- 6. Access your eVisa through your UKVI account once approved.
Standard visa decisions take around 3 weeks, with settlement cases up to 12 weeks; the priority visa service can shorten non-settlement decisions. Our guide to processing times after biometrics explains the timelines once biometrics are given.

Not for short visits, but they need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. The ETA costs £20, lasts 2 years, and covers stays of up to 6 months for tourism, business, or family visits. From 25 February 2026 it is enforced at boarding — no ETA, no travel. A full visa is required only for work, study over 6 months, or settlement, and on those routes US grant rates are 95–99%.
No visa is needed to visit London or anywhere in the UK for up to 6 months. Since 8 January 2025, however, US citizens must hold an approved ETA before travelling, costing £20 and valid for 2 years. Apply through the UK ETA app, usually with a decision in minutes. The ETA covers unlimited visits to London, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland during its validity.
It depends on passport nationality, not the Green Card. Holders from visa-exempt countries such as Canada, Australia, EU states, or Japan need only an ETA (£20). Holders from visa-national countries such as India, Pakistan, China, or Nigeria need a full UK visitor visa ($189) even for a short London trip. The Green Card does not exempt you, though US residence and income can strengthen a visa application.
Yes. Indian passport holders must apply for a UK visitor visa, costing $189 for six months, regardless of their US Green Card, because the UK assesses entry on passport nationality rather than residence. Apply through VFS Global in the US — the process mirrors applying from India, but a US Green Card, job, and bank statements help evidence strong ties and improve the application.
The ETA for short visits is £20. For longer stays: the Student visa is $783, the Skilled Worker visa $1,149 for up to 3 years, and the Spouse visa $2,896. Where a visit visa is required — mainly for Green Card holders from visa-national countries — it is $189 for six months. Work, study, and family routes also require the Immigration Health Surcharge in pounds at £1,035 per year, or £776 for students.
A US citizen travelling on an ETA can stay for up to 6 months per visit. The ETA is valid for 2 years and allows unlimited entries, but no single visit may exceed 6 months, and you cannot work or claim public funds as a visitor. For longer stays you need a visa on the study, work, or family route. Frequent visitors may prefer a long-term visit visa of 2, 5, or 10 years.
