From 1 January 2021, Swedes and other EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens (aside from Irish citizens) living in Sweden need to apply for a visa for living, working, or studying longer than six months in the UK. Accordingly, Swedes, or other EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens (aside from Irish citizens) will need to meet specific requirements of respective settlement, study, and work routes for getting a valid visa before arrival in the UK.

After the end of the free movement, Swedes and other EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens living in Sweden do not need a visa for visiting the UK for up to six months. Non-EU nationals living, working, or studying in Sweden, need a visa for visiting the UK.

How to Apply for UK Visa from Sweden?

Swedish citizens can check whether they require a UK visa by using the online tool. If they require visa, then can apply online.

Swedish nationals who need to apply for a visa to come to the UK should be able to complete their entire application online using the Immigration App to verify their identity.     Family Settlement Visa to Emigrate (Move) from Sweden to UK

    After Brexit, family route enables Swedish citizens to emigrate (move) from Sweden to UK. The family route is for those Swedes who can apply for a UK visa because of their relationship to a person settled in the UK or a British citizen. This includes spouse settlement visa, adult dependant relative, parent of a British Child visa etc.

    Spouse or Partner Visa to Emigrate from Sweden to UK

    In terms of Appendix FM of the Immigration Rules, Swedes can apply for spouse or partner visa under the 5-year route to emigrate from Sweden to UK.

    If Swedes meet the UK spouse visa requirements under the 5-year route, then get an entry clearance as a spouse, civil, unmarried, same-sex partner for an initial period of 33 months with a condition of no recourse to public funds.

    After 30 months Swedes need to make spouse visa extension application for a further leave to remain in the UK.

    Swedes may qualify for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) after completing 60 months (5 years) in the UK on spouse visa. The ILR under the 5-year spouse visa route is for those who meet all the suitability and eligibility requirements of the Immigration Rules at every stage.     In terms of Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules HC 1118 dated 15 March 2022, Home Office has introduced Global Business Mobility Visa UK.

    The New Global Business Mobility Visa route consists of several new sponsored categories for businesses that are intending to establish presence in the UK, transfer overseas staff, or come to the United Kingdom for a specific business purpose. The five sub-categories to Global Business Mobility Visa UK are:

    1. Senior or Specialist Worker
    2. Graduate Trainee
    3. UK Expansion Worker
    4. Service Supplier
    5. Secondment Worker

    Swedish citizens can get the Global Business Mobility visa if the UK employer sponsor the worker to come to the UK for specific job. The Global Business Mobility visa is points based. Accordingly, Swedes need to score 40 to 60 points depending on the sub-category of Global Business Mobility Visa UK. All five sub-categories of Global Business Mobility visa do not lead to settlement (ILR) in the UK. Therefore, Swedish citizens cannot emigrate (permanently move) to UK from Sweden through Global Business Mobility route.

    Senior or Specialist Worker

    Global Mobility Business Senior or Specialist Worker Visa UK has replaced the Intra-company Transfer route. This route is for senior managers or specialist employees who are assigned to a UK business which is linked by common ownership to the overseas employing company.

    Senior or Specialist Worker visa UK fees depends on the duration of the Certificate of Sponsorship (COS) for main applicant and dependants. If the COS is for three years or less, then the Senior or Specialist Worker visa fees in Sweden are €770. However, if the COS is for three years or more then the application cost is €1,521.

    Graduate Trainee

    Graduate Trainee Visa UK has replaced the Intra-Company Graduate Trainee route. This route is for workers on a graduate training course which leads to a senior management or specialist position and who are required to undertake a work placement in the UK. Graduate Trainee Visa UK Fees in Sweden are €319.

    UK Expansion Worker

    The UK Expansion Worker Visa has replaced the Sole Representative of an Overseas Business route. However, the Sole Representative visa will remain open for Media Representatives and those already on Sole Representative visa extending or applying for ILR in the UK.

    The UK Expansion Worker Visa is for specialist or senior employees who are assigned to the UK to assist with the overseas business’s expansion to the UK. Expansion Worker visa application price in Sweden is €319.

    Service Supplier

    The Service Supplier Visa UK has replaced contractual service providers and independent professional persons in the T5 Temporary Worker – International Agreement route.

    Service Supplier Visa is for overseas workers coming to the UK to provide a service that is in line with a UK trade commitment. The UK Service Supplier Visa application cost for Swedish citizens is €319.

    Secondment Worker

    The UK Secondment Worker Visa is a new route. The Secondment Worker route is for those Swedish citizens who are seconded to the UK as part of a high value contract or investment by their employer overseas. Secondment Worker visa UK Fees in Sweden are €319.

    High Potential Individual (HPI)

    In terms of Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules HC 1118 dated 15 March 2022, Home Office has introduced High Potential Individual visa. The High Potential Individual Visa UK is for those Swedes who have graduated from the top-50 Universities across the world and wish to come to the UK to undertake full-time employment or self-employment work or seek employment opportunities. The New High Potential Individual visa fees in Sweden are €880.

    To get HPI visa UK, Swedes must have been awarded within the last 5 years a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree qualification from one of the top global universities (non-UK) which is published in the Home Office’s ‘Global Universities List’.

    Swedish citizens having Bachelor’s or Master’s degree will get a 2-year non-extendable High Potential Individual Visa UK. Applicants having a PhD qualification can get a 3-year High Potential Visa.

    Swedes need to meet the English language and financial requirements for scoring 70 points. High Potential Individual Visa route does not lead to settlement (indefinite leave to remain – ILR) but Swedish citizens can switch to other routes if they intend to work, emigrate, or move to UK.

    Scale-up visa for Emigrate to UK from Sweden

    Swedes will be able to apply for Scale-up Visa UK from Aug 22, 2022. The New Scale-up Visa UK Fee in Sweden is €880.

    The Scale-up visa is those Swedish citizens who have a sponsored job offer from an authorised UK scale-up company to qualify for a ‘fast-track visa’. To register for this route, a company will need to demonstrate they have an annualised growth of at least 20% for the previous 3-year period in terms of turnover or staffing and have a minimum of 10 employees at the start of the 3-year period.

    The job offer must be skilled at RQF Level 6 or equivalent (graduate level) – higher than the current threshold for Skilled Worker applications which is set at RQF Level 3. The UK Scale-up Visa minimum salary requirements for Swedish citizens are at least £33,000 per year or the going rate for the occupation.

    Swedish citizens will initially get a Scale-up Visa for 2-years – the first six months of which they need to work for the sponsor. Afterwards, Swedes may be eligible to extend the Scaleup visa in the UK for up to 3 years.

    Swedish migrants in the UK on a Scale-up visa can apply for settlement (indefinite leave to remain – ILR) after a period of 5 years. Therefore, Swedish citizens can emigrate (permanently move) to UK from Sweden through Scale-up visa route.

    Global Talent Visa for Emigrate to UK from Sweden

    Swedes can apply for Global Talent Visa UK if they are leaders or potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. Global Talent visa has replaced the Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa.

    Swedes can emigrate (permanently move) to UK from Sweden through Global Talent visa route.

    Start-up

    If Swedish citizens intend to set up an innovative business for the first time in the UK, then can apply for the Start-up visa. The Start-up visa has replaced the Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur route in March 2019. However, unlike Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur, for start-up visa there is no requirement of graduation or securing any initial funding.

    Successful applicants may get up to 2-year leave. Start-up is not a route to settlement. However, Swedes may be eligible to move permanently to UK if they progress from start-up to innovator, which is a route to settlement.

    If Swedish citizens intend to do innovative, viable, and scalable business in the UK then can apply for the Innovator visa. The Innovator visa has replaced the Tier 1 Entrepreneur route in March 2019. The Innovator Visa UK fees in Sweden are €1,276.
